For the next eight months, I have been privileged to be part of the YLead program. This program is designed to help young Anglicare staff from various positions of leadership to develop the understanding of what it may mean for them to exercise more effective and sustainable leadership in their own lives, communities, churches, or workplaces.

The intensive began on the weekend that just went by. The intensive was experiential, practical and encouraging. The design of the intensive was based on holding together a balance of action and reflection. It provided a safe space for the group to explore for ourselves ideas of leadership and how we fit into the scheme of things both in the organisation and our respective services. I came away from this part of the intensives feeling very challenged and inspired about my leadership roles at home, church, and work.

Over the next few weeks, I want to bring to the floor different aspects of leadership that I’ve been able to glean from these intensives. Though, rather than me giving you what I think of leadership (because I don’t know all that much), I would like for people to discuss openly and respectfully the ideas I will raise in each post. I think it is great that we can wrestle over truths and be humbled by the fact that we might just not know everything about a certain topic and that we may actually learn from one another.

Over the next few weeks I will bring to our attention different articles on the different aspects of leadership such as: surviving in leadership, the theory and practice of leadership, leading in the moment, technical versus adaptive, management and so on. These articles will help give us a language to operate by and discuss issues over.

For this post, I would like to get your ideas on what you think leadership is. Basically, I’m asking people to post a definition. Is leadership the superhero who saves the day? Is the guy who commands everyone? Is it the most important person? Does He rule with power? Does it involve position? Please let me know… The world has much to say on what leadership is and now I want to hear what you have to say. So please post your definitions.

I look forward to the coming weeks in discussing an important topic!

Leadership is an elusive quality that is very difficult to describe. Here’s some definitions if you’re interested. =D

I heard leadership and management being described thusly:

A leader tells woodcutters to cut wood in Forrest A instead of Forrest B for example.

A manager tells the wood cutters to cut faster and more efficiently

    Something like that :)

Thanks for the post guys… a working definition I’ve come up with:

Leadership is the ability to inspire and influence people to use their strengths to achieve a common goal…

To me Leadership is a privelage given by God, a humble position respected by those influenced by it, to lead those who need direction and guidance and only done with God’s strength and his grace, guidance and direction.
