“He’s missing the forest for the trees” is a saying which means that a person can get so caught up with the details that they end up missing the main point. Time and time again I have seen myself fall into this trap where the little things, though important, become the only focus in life. Sadly, as a result, I miss the big picture. This is so true when it comes to planning my daily schedule. The big picture starts by looking at our purpose here on earth and that is to honour and obey God, working diligently to follow the principles set forth in His Word.
But what we do is contrary to our purpose. We focus on the details- climbing the corporate ladder, accumulating material things, running children to every conceivable sporting event, participating in this or that committee, working crazy amounts of overtime, pursuing that dream, running here, running there. We have missed the big picture! Take the time to look at your to-do list. Is there anything on it that is going to enhance, grow, and strengthen your relationship with God? Is there anything on it that might not be pleasing to Him? What can you cross off and exchange for something of real and lasting significance?
Know that God has a purpose for our lives and we ought to get in tune with it because it is for our good.
Jeremiah 29:11- ““For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.””
Isaiah 25:1- “O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure.”
By living the plans that have been set out for us in God’s Word, we will find fulfillment in this life.
Psalms 119: 1-2- “Happy are people of integrity, who follow the law of the LORD. Happy are those who search for him with all their hearts.”
