UK Election Result

It has been an interesting week in the UK.

For a while there it seemed there was a third wave that was going to dominate the British Parliament in the shape of the Liberal Democrats led by the charismatic (politically speaking) Nick Clegg.

I watched some of the debates and Clegg was charming, eloquent and very convincing. If I lived in Britain I would have been tempted to vote for him.

Clegg was good at telling the public that they could no longer trust the established political parties (eg made up of democratically elected politicians) but rather they could trust him and his party.

Somehow or another the electorate didn’t buy this proposition: get rid of the devil you know in exchange for one you don’t know.

As things turned out Clegg’s party lost a few seats but they will still likely form a coalition with the conservative Tories (the UK equivalent of our Liberal Party). One of the parties that Clegg told the British public you couldn’t trust, but nonetheless he may still form government with.

So the net result is: little if much will change.

The lesson in all this is elections bring different faces to the corridors of power but the same problems and issues are simply repackaged to be fought out at the next election.

I do believe our elected officials have their hearts in the right place (most of the time).

To put up with the demanding hours, unfettered media intrusion and the fact that almost half your electorate didn’t vote for you in the first place and don’t like the job you are doing anyway, doesn’t sound like much fun to me.

While we can and should have legitimate expectations in our electoral representatives, our trust needs to remain in God.

He raises up whomsoever He will, whether by popular vote, royal succession or even by hostile takeover.

The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, Like the rivers of water;  He turns it wherever He wishes. Proverbs 21:1

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-3
