The Power of Personal Choices

choices2At a camp a few weeks ago I brought two successive messages on the life of David.

In one message I dealt with David’s submission to Saul and in the next message, I looked at his friendship with Jonathan.

When one considers the enormous disaster Saul made of his life, it is simply remarkable that he had a son like Jonathan!

With the brazen example that Saul brought of expediency and disobedience to his family and the nation of Israel, you would almost ‘bet’ that Jonathan would have followed his father’s footsteps.

Interestingly, while Jonathan perished on the field of battle against the Philistines, as Saul arranged for his own death, David praises both of them in 2 Samuel 1.

Surely a powerful lesson in the life of Jonathan is that while it is the goodness of God that allows us to serve Him, He does require personal choices of obedience and commitment-no matter what the cost.

The truth is that despite the bad example of Saul’s character, Jonathan still had godly examples in David and the host of Old Testaments saints that are recorded in the Pentateuch.

The truth is that we can learn as much from bad or even mixed examples as we can from good examples! (For all our feet are made of clay)

Ultimately, the question is not who your earthly authorities are- the issue is what we do with the opportunities God gives to us each day.

All hail the God of Jonathan!
