The Demands of Bible Preaching
On the weekend, a few parents from our church and myself took down some of our young people to a youth conference. It took 2 hours just to get there (and we missed the first session).
We then heard 3 strong Bible messages (about an hour long each sermon) on personal holiness interspersed with breaks, lunch, songs, etc. It was a great day.
I tried to talk some kids out of coming as I thought it might have been too much given where they are currently at spiritually. It was almost like ‘Will ye also go away?‘
Bible preaching is worth listening to for intensive and extended periods.
While not every Saturday but certainly a couple of times a year. We think nothing surfing the net, watching tele- for hours on end. Ad infinitem. So let’s get excited about gathering around the Book that should mean everything to us!
Young people can sit through demanding Bible preaching without the best stories and funniest jokes. We just need to develop their appetite for it.
Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, ….. 2 Timothy 4:2-3

wow, great post. Thought-provoking and a little convicting! Thanks for sharing! :)
As one of the parents who attended the conference I was impressed that so many young people were willing to sit through a full day of solid preaching with very little fidgeting or nodding off. Nigel Davies certainly presented the subject well and you could hear a pin drop at the end of each session when Pastor Tracey very quietly summed up and appealed to the young people to not go away and forget what they had heard. I know I got heaps out of the 3 sessions and just hope and pray that these young people can avoid some of the pitfalls of allowing the world to shape their thinking rather than Gods Word.
Watching movies is an obvious correlation to your post – if you can watch a movie – you can listen to a speaker.
