Teaching and Learning

379651_mother_and_daughterMy desire for being a part of InFocus is to be an encouragement to other women, specifically, to younger women. Even with my birthday today, I still consider myself to be one of those younger women! I love when opportunities arise to glean wisdom from an older woman. There is so much to learn from older women if only we would take the time to sit and listen. They’ve walked down the same road for much longer. They’ve had successes and failures that we can learn from. In fact, Titus 2:3-5 instructs the older women to teach the younger.

Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.

If the older women are to teach, then it follows that the younger women are to learn. Learning takes time and effort. We must apply ourselves diligently to learn from older women. That means we must seek out opportunities to talk with godly older women. We need to ask them questions, ask for help and advice, and ask for prayer. Do you have a godly older woman in your life that you can look to for counsel and help? Is there an older woman in your life giving you instruction? If you don’t have an older woman in your life, could I encourage you to seek one out? Go to your pastor’s wife or to another godly lady in your church and ask them to help you as a younger woman.

These next several weeks I would like to take the opportunity to go through each of these seven qualities of the younger woman. Not only are these qualities that I know I need to work on, but they are also qualities that I have a passion and desire to help other young woman to grow in and develop.

“Consider the loveliness of a woman who passionately adores her husband, who tenderly cherishes her children, who creates a warm and peaceful home, who exemplifies purity, self-control and kindness in her character and who gladly submits to her husband’s leadership—for all the days God grants her life. I dare say there are few things that display the gospel jewel with greater elegance.” (Carolyn Mahaney, Feminine Appeal, p. 29)

Treasures to Share
I’ll be continuing to share websites, books and other resources that I have found to be a help to me. This is one that I have been so anxious to share with you. Rachel Barkey is a young wife and mother who has recently been given the news that she is dying from cancer. She recently gave a powerful and moving testimony to a group of ladies which was recorded. It is certainly well worth the fifty minutes to sit and listen to the things she has learned as she faces death.
