Success is Succession

78080One of the boom areas in the corporate legal sector is what is called business succession planning.

Unfortunately not even the brightest business people know how to plan their exits- whether through voluntary or forced retirement, or when, unfortunately, they are hit by the proverbial bus.

It is the smart thing to plan around the idea that no person is really indispensable to any organisation, or that they will always be around.

The same is true of the church.

Local churches belong to Christ and He is their Head. Christ has in place his under-shepherds (pastors or elders) who lead the ministry while following directions through the book He left them, the Bible.

Like other people, pastors get old and sick. Some are even reported to die.

While the Bible does not contain the word ‘retirement’ it does affirm again and again that advances in age bring its own set of frustrations and limitations.

Though experienced leaders are invaluable to churches, in fairness to all concerned, a succession plan needs to be in place.

Remember that even the ants in the Book of Proverbs get an applause for planning ahead.

Too many churches have folded not because of bad planning- but because of no planning about their future.
