Random Reflections of a New Dad

infocus-1

.

.

Last Tuesday night my wife and I became parents when Michael was born. He is small and cute. Things will never be the same, and that is probably a good thing.

Here are some scattered (and hopefully coherent) thoughts that have been wizzing through my head while driving back and forth from hospital:

Thanksgiving

We have reached new depths of thankfulness to our God for entrusting us with this child. Michael doesn’t ultimately belong to us, but to the One who created him. He has been given to us for just a little while.

Wisdom

We need a lot of it.

At the moment, my parental ignorance knows no boundaries. Thank God for supporting family, church, friends, and most of all the Scriptures.

Gratefulness

On the way to the maternity ward, I had to walk past the special care unit. In that section, there are gravely ill newborns, some of whom will not leave hospital for many weeks or months.

While having a ‘healthy’ baby is not the idol of our hearts, we are thankful that God has seen fit to bless us with one.

History

We have entered a phase that is common the world over, whether in the city, village or country. Every person you meet at work, school, or down at the shops all began where our son began-naked and helpless, with parents who didn’t quite know what they were to do.

Admiration

My wife ran a couple of marathons giving birth to Michael. Men, if you ever get to sit ‘ringside’ you are in for one serious revelation. Despite hours of lack of sleep and pain that guys know nothing about, the Lord got Katie through the labour. Eve’s curse still bites hard.

Respect

The medical profession, including the midwives deserve a round of applause. They work (and live) in the realm of life and death. They are the true human ‘healers’ of our society and are gifted to work under the most trying of circumstances.

Responsibility

While Katie and I will partner to raise Michael, the spiritual buck stopsinfocus-2 with me. My walk with Christ will set the tone for our household, for good or bad.

Grace

God is good and has given us this new phase of life for some good reasons. We don’t want to miss any of them, nor the blessings and challenges of each new day.

Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Psalm 127:3
