Focus On The Faith

crosshairsBelievers the world over would agree on the importance of our faith. Last year, my pastor, preaching through Ephesians, covered the importance of our faith in regards to unity, and how we can only achieve unity because of our faith. It is not having faith which unites us, but rather it’s having “the faith”, and “the knowledge of the Son of God”.

till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ

Ephesians 4:12

Unity between believers is a wonderful thing to see. The most remarkable aspect of that unity is, I believe, how it can draw together believers of vastly different backgrounds, breaking down any barriers normally imposed by differences in culture, social standing, and political affiliations.

The same faith that brings us together can be a dividing factor if we’re not careful. The stronger our faith, the more resisting we become of anything different than what we hold to. While this is helpful in giving us stability and grounding in what we believe, it can allow us to confuse matters that aren’t central to our faith with those that are.

Keep your focus on God, on his person and his will for you as clearly presented in scripture. Anything else that becomes our focus becomes a distraction, and can lead us to a life of idolatry and divisive decisions that lead us to alienate other believers that we form the body of Christ with. I’d like to conclude with another verse:

Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.

Proverbs 4:25-27
