Cast down

There are times in our Christian lives that we are cast down. We are perplexed, in despair and distressed in soul. We are in need of restoration. Psalm 23:3 states, “He restores my soul.” Phillip Keller, in A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, draws upon his experience as a shepherd to give us insight into how a cast down sheep is restored. A “cast down” sheep is a sheep that has turned on its back and cannot get up again by itself. It is in need of the shepherd’s help to be set up. It lies there in frustration frantically trying to stand up without success. A cast down sheep is in danger of death as it lies there helpless, vulnerable to attacks from predators. Have you been in that “cast down” state? Have you been completely distressed of soul? David was. He knew the frustration of failure, of having yielded to sin. He was in despair. Yet, in his distress he came to understand the restoring power of our tender and loving Shepherd. He says of His Shepherd, “He restores my soul.” Do we think that God turns away from us in frustration and anger when we have failed? May we not ever think that to be so. He lovingly, gently, and reassuringly comes to restore us when we’re cast down. He is the Good Shepherd who cares for His sheep.
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. Psalm 42:11
