An Investment in the Soul

I am just back from attending a Bible conference.bible-1

The conference lived up to its name: we heard one Bible saturated message after another. 16 of them in fact.

I was away from home for 6 days. It was a substantial investment, whether judged by time or money spent in getting there. But it was an investment well worth making.

Can our time be better spent than sitting under the ministry of God’s Word?

The preaching was not just clear Bible exposition: it was passionate, earnest and practical.

The congregational singing and special music was enthusiastic and reverent.
In other words, it enhanced the purpose of the conference: gathering around God’s Word rather than detracting from the holy things.

Of course the fellowship before and after the meetings, over coffee, or a meal brought joy and encouragement. I loved talking with many of God’s servants who have faithfully stuck it out in the same churches for 20+ years.

So do yourself a favour: once a year or so, go to a Bible conference or Christian camp and immerse yourself in God’s Word for an extended period. If it means saving your pennies then so be it. Open a special account. Whatever it takes. Just do it.

And when you get there- seek out godly mentors who have a lifetime of service behind them and ask them about how God has worked in their lives.

Don’t make the mistake that Rehoboam made: listen to our godly elders and learn from their words and actions.
